Most roof structures for cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks fail miserably in a rollover accident. Big does not equal safer, as shown in the photo below of the crushed pickup roof.

ToggleBig And Heavy Does Not Mean A Vehicle Is Safer
Weak roof structures crush down on the occupants or deform to destroy the occupant’s survival space. Grim statistics underscore how the roof structure remains the vehicle’s weakest safety link. Rollover accidents account for 16 percent of severe injuries to passenger car occupants and 42 percent of severe injuries to light truck occupants. Yet, rollovers only make up only 3 percent of all accidents.
Spinal Chord Injuries Caused By Defective Roofs In Rollover Accidents
Vehicle Safety Lawyer Todd Tracy explains what happens to occupants when they are crushed by a weak defective roof in a rollover accident.

Government Rollover Crash Tests Are Unrealistic
The government routinely gives passing rollover test grades to manufacturers that receive failing grades in real-world rollover accidents. The government roof strength standard is weak, and its static test is unrealistic. A rollover is a series of impacts that can involve the front, side, roof, and rear of the vehicle. The government does not require dynamic testing that applies real-world accident forces to the roof.
I found in case-after-case of rollover accident lawsuits that when the roof came down on the person’s head, the force killed or paralyzed the victim.
Volvo Sets The Standard For Safety In Rollover Accidents
Volvo, on the other hand, has demonstrated that roof strength matters and saves lives. Its main design objective for the XC-90 was the elimination of head impacts in rollover accidents. Volvo achieved its design objective by establishing a performance requirement of no contact between the head and roof.
None of the crash test dummies in this Volvo XC-90 sustain life-threatening injuries in this rollover accident crash test.

There are technologically and economically feasible design alternatives that could be used to strengthen vehicle roof structures. These include using foam-filled material in the pillars, header, and roof panel. Testing has shown that foam, along with other minor structural modifications, can increase roof strength by 300%.
Weak Roof Structures Cause Death And Catastrophic Injuries
Inadequate vehicle structure dangerously compromises occupant protection measures. Rollover accidents killed and crippled thousands of people over the past decades due to pathetically weak roof structures that excessively crush down on occupants.

How To Tell If You May Have A Defective Roof Rollover Accident Case
- The occupants were wearing their seatbelts when the roof crushed down on them.
- They died because of an injury called positional asphyxia.
- The rollover injuries left them paralyzed or quadriplegic.
