Hello. I’m Todd Tracy with the Tracy Law Firm in Dallas, Texas and I’m here to talk to you today about the purpose of a frontal airbag.

A lot of times people think, “What exactly is my airbag supposed to do?” Well, let me put it to you like this. The front airbag is a safety system that is a high speed collision protection device. You don’t need it if you’re in a parking lot because your seatbelt will do its job.

If you’re on the highway going highway speeds, if you’re at a stoplight and somebody runs through a stop sign, you need your airbag. Why does the airbag protect you in an accident? Well, I want you to think about it like this.

Usually we just have a seatbelt on that’s one and three-quarter inches wide, protecting our chest and our torso and our lap. However, in a high speed event, your body gets overloaded with that, so you need the airbag.

The airbag is over 30 inches wide, so instead of having something poking at you like a knife blade, it’s something that’s very dull like the – like a baseball coming into you or a basketball coming into you rather than the tip of a knife point or the tip of a pin.

The whole idea behind vehicle safety is distributing the loads, distributing the forces over a wide area as possible. Would you rather be protected by one and three-quarter inches or by 30 inches? I don’t know about you. I would rather have the front airbag deploy and give me 30 inches of coverage to protect my chest, my heart, my torso and my head.

If you, a family member, or friend have suffered a traumatic car accident injury or they were killed in an auto accident, there may be grounds for a product liability lawsuit against the car maker. The victim’s or family members of the deceased person may be entitled to significantly more money in damages than just a negligence case about the cause of the accident.

The Tracy Law Firm focuses on “Who Caused The Traumatic Car Accident Injuries or Death” — not who caused the accident.

Whether you were at fault or not in the cause of the accident, car companies are required by federal motor vehicle safety standards to make vehicles that will protect the driver and passengers from catastrophic injuries or death.
