“This may be the largest, most complicated consumer safety recall in our nation’s history,” NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said to the committee today.
Kennedy also said that the chemical ammonium nitrate would be replaced by other propellant guanidine nitrate gradually as an air bag propellant in Takata.
Consumers are advised not to inspect airbags on their own. They should also not disable them.
The best way to figure out if your airbags is recalled is to locate your vehicle identification number, vin – which can be found on the driver’s side where the dashboard meets the windshield or on the driver’s side door post.
Enter that vin at www.safercar.gov
Without the VIN, consumers cannot find out whether their car is part of the new recall.
