General Motor’s saga of vehicle safety defects and its recalls for public safety continues with even more number of recalls on ignition switch issues. GM recalled 3.36 million mid size and full size cars all over the world for ignition switches that have immense effect on power steering, power breaks, and airbags. The ignition switch defect is similar to the previous recalls from GM on Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars.
GM engineers were not late to find out the problem with these vehicles but rather they first noted the problem a decade ago. And, it can be inferred that with the investigations by Congress and federal agencies, GMC has no other option than to act fast on the safety of general public at large. Only this year, GM has recalled 20 million vehicles worldwide of which, 6.5 million of the vehicles were recalled for ignition-switch related defects.
The vehicles affected by the recall are:
- 2005-09 Buick LaCrosse
- 2006-13 Chevrolet Impala
- 2014 Impala (rental car companies)
- 2000-05 Cadillac Deville
- 2004-11 Cadillac DTS
- 2006-11 Buick Lucerne
- 2004-05 Buick Regal LS, GS
- 2006-08 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
“The best way to assure safety in these vehicles until the key is reworked or replaced is to drive with the ignition key alone,” the GM spokesman Alan Adler said.
FIX:
The insertion or complete replacement of the keys that causes the defect in affected GM vehicles.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), said that it would “monitor the pace and effectiveness” of the latest GM recall and “take necessary action as warranted.”
General Motors needs to fix the defects in all of their vehicles as soon as they get to know about them to ensure vehicle safety. They also need to have plans to establish a victim’s compensation fund as there will be many individuals that were victimized with the injuries resulted from the negligence of General Motors.
